Statement from President of VCU Chapter of the AAUP

On May 22, 2008 an article published by The New York Times spawned a debate about corporate sponsorship of university research, academic freedom, and other issues that has aroused national attention. The questions involved are of pivotal importance for academic communities and of great concern for the faculty. In my opinion, more information is needed to understand the specifics of the case and its ramifications. I therefore welcome Dr. Trani’s proposed creation of a taskforce (as long as faculty are fairly represented) to look into the guidelines and policies regarding corporate sponsorship of research at VCU.
